Traffic Safety and Regulation The Village of Oak Park employs professional traffic engineers who monitor traffic conditions and administer traffic safety and regulation programs and processes. The placement and modification of traffic control devices must, in most cases, be approved by the Village Board, which often depends on the Transportation Commission, a volunteer citizen advisory Board made up of Oak Park residents, to review issues relating to traffic and parking regulation. Proposals to change traffic regulations can be initiated by the direction of the Village Board, by Village staff or by Village residents. Residents seeking to change a traffic regulation should contact Engineering staff to discuss the nature of the problems and possible options. A petition, using a form available from Engineering staff, can be used to formally request a particular action be taken. After receipt of a petition which qualifies for Transportation Commission consideration, engineering staff review of traffic patterns and accident rates, and a meeting is scheduled before the Transportation Commission to review staff findings and give area residents an opportunity to give their views. The Transportation Commission then makes a recommendation to the Village Board for final action. Matters addressed through this general process include placement of stop signs at an intersection, installation of cul-de-sacs (with some additional steps) and signalization of intersections. Typically, the residents on the street receiving a cul-de-sac incur the cost of through self-assessment. |
