Streets & Signs Division
Snow Removal
Salting usually is the first stage in snow removal. Crews continue to salt throughout the snowfall, but may limit applications to major streets and intersections. However, all streets, including secondary and residential streets, will be plowed. Additional equipment salts other key areas such as downtown sidewalks, municipal parking lots, schools and school cross walks, expressway bridges and viaducts. Plowing is necessary whenever snowfall accumulations are expected to exceed two inches. A two-or-more-inch snowfall triggers the Village's Emergency Snow Parking Plan. Priority is given to posted emergency snow routes to ensure that public safety equipment can respond even in times of a major snowfall. Alleys are plowed following larger snowfalls, but only after the streets are adequately cleared and safe. In order to allow snow removal to occur as effectively as possible it is important to follow the established snow parking guidelines. Residents are required to remove snow from the sidewalks in front of their homes, and businesses must clear the way for pedestrians as soon as possible after a storm, but within 24 hours. To alert Public Works officials to any particular conditions that need attention during a snow storm call 358.5700. The Village also maintains an automated telephone system to alert residents if the emergency snow parking plan is in effect. Call 358.SNOW for the latest information. Cable television subscribers also can tune into VOP-TV on channel six for updates. |
