Call 708.358.SNOW (7669) to find out if the emergency snow parking rules are in effect Parking restricted when it snows If more than a century of record-keeping history is any indication, the Chicago area typically has its first measurable snowfall by mid-November. And the threat often continues well into March. For the Village of Oak Park, a measurable snowfall means the Emergency Snow Removal Parking Plan goes into effect. After a two-inch snowfall, the Public Works Department may announce the following parking rules, seven days a week, including holidays:
Snow parking restrictions do not apply to emergency vehicles, of course, and delivery vehicles are allowed to park up to 10 minutes. The Snow Emergency Removal Parking Plan does not override other parking regulations, however, such as time-limitations and prohibitions. Vehicles parked in violation of the snow restrictions are subject to ticketing and towing. The purpose of the plan is to ensure access by emergency vehicles, improve traffic movement and allow snow removal equipment to operate quickly and efficiently. When snow begins to fall, Village crews start salting streets, and when snow accumulates, they begin to plow. Main streets designated as snow routes are cleared first. Plow drivers then move on to secondary and arterial streets. Cul-de-sacs and dead end streets are plowed last. Alleys are plowed after five inches of snow, but are salted and plowed sooner if time permits. To find out if snow-related parking restrictions are in effect, call 708.358.SNOW for a recorded message. Cable subscribers can tune into VOP-TV, available on Comcast channel 6 and AT&T channel 99. For more information about the Emergency Snow Removal Parking Plan, call the Public Works Department at 708.358.5700 during regular working hours, 7:30 am - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Snow Routes When the snow parking ban is announced, parking is prohibited on Augusta Blvd., Austin Blvd., Chicago Ave., Division St., Garfield St., Harlem Ave., Harrison St., Jackson Blvd., Lake St., Madison St., North Ave., Oak Park Ave., Ridgeland Ave., Roosevelt Road and Wisconsin Ave. from Madison St. to the emergency entrance of Oak Park Hospital. Parking on a snow route when the ban is in effect carries a fine of $100.
