Parking Services Division Parking Issues Parking regulations and restrictions are established to help manage the scarce parking resources in Oak Park, to ensure public and traffic safety, to maintain the integrity of neighborhoods, and to encourage good public parking policy. When parking regulations no longer suit the needs of an area, there is a process to adjust to changing conditions. Constructive ideas and comments of people who live, work or own businesses or property in the Village are needed and welcomed. Residents and business owners are encouraged to consult with Parking Service staff to discuss options that may be available to address a particular parking issue. A petition process can be used to formally request that the Village change a specific parking regulations such as accessible parking, drop off/loading zone creation, curb parking or permit parking. A petition to change parking regulations, available through Parking Services, must be signed by at least 51 percent of the street frontage that would be affected by the requested change. A petition begins the review process, but does not guarantee a change to a regulation. The Parking and Traffic Commission, an citizen advisory body to the Village Board, typically considers requests submitted by petition or staff that require a change in ordinance, and makes recommendations to the Village Board. The Village Board must approve most parking restriction changes through adoption of an ordinance. |
