Parking Services Division Disabled Parking Spaces Committed to providing equal access for persons with disabilities, the Village regularly reviews areas for local compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and aggressively enforces restrictions that ensure accessibility to sidewalks and curbs. Persons with disabilities that limit or prevent their ability to walk are granted permission to park in specified accessible areas and are exempted by state law from paying parking meter fees (except where 30 minutes or less). License plates and placards, recognized nationwide, identify a vehicle as belonging to a qualified disabled person. A brochure detailing how to qualify and the privileges granted can be obtained from the Secretary of State's office. The Village is authorized by the Uniform Vehicle Code of the State of Illinois to install handicapped parking signs for persons with Illinois disabled vehicle license plates or a current Illinois disabled person card or tag. The Village can install both unpermitted and permitted signage. An unpermitted disabled parking sign allows any person with valid disabled license plates or card/tag to park a vehicle in the space. A permitted disabled parking sign entitles the permit holder the exclusive use of the parking space. The Village will install an unpermitted disabled parking sign at no cost to the applicant and with no annual renewal fee. However, the Village charges an initial fee as well as an annual renewal fee for the installation of a permitted disabled parking sign. Contact Parking Services for a disabled parking application form; call the Illinois Secretary of State's office at 312.793.1010 to apply for disabled vehicle license plates; and call the Oak Park Township office at 708.383.8005 to apply for a temporary disabled card.
