Health Screenings Checkups

The key to staying well is taking care of oneself and getting checked by a doctor regularly so that health problems can be detected at an early stage. Early detection will mean more time for treatment before a health problem creates long-term issues. The following list of important health screenings for men and women may help you stay well by detecting potential health problems:

Men

Ages 20 – 39
•Physical exam every three years
•Blood pressure every year
•Blood tests and urinalysis (cholesterol, diabetes, kidney and thyroid dysfunction) every three years
•Electrocardiogram (EKG) at 30 years of age
•Tetanus booster every 10 years
•Rectal exam every year
•Testicular, skin, oral and breast self-exams every month
•Sexually transmitted diseases screening
•Tuberculosis skin test, if you or your doctor feels you are at high risk

Ages 40 – 49
•Physical exam every two years
•Blood pressure every year
•Blood tests and urinalysis (cholesterol, diabetes, kidney and thyroid dysfunction) every two years
•Electrocardiogram (EKG) every four years
•Tetanus booster every 10 years
•Rectal exam every year
•Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test is recommended for African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer at 40 years of age
•Hemoccult (microscopic stool screening for polyps and colon cancer) every year
•Chest x-ray – discuss with doctor, especially if you are or were a smoker
•Testicular, skin, oral and breast self-exams every month
•Tuberculosis skin test, if you or your doctor feels you are at high risk

50 Years of Age and Older
•Physical exam every year
•Blood pressure every year

•Pap smear every one to three years starting at age 21
•Cholesterol test starting at age 21, then once every one to two years if normal
•Blood pressure starting at age 21, then once every one to two years if normal
•Breast exam yearly by health care provider, monthly self-breast exam
•Mental health screening discuss with health provider
•Thyroid test starting at age 35, then every five years
•Chlamydia test if sexually active, yearly until age 25

Women Ages 40 - 49
•Mammogram every one to two years starting at age 40
•Blood sugar test starting at age 45, then every three years
•Blood pressure every one to two years
•Thyroid test every five years
•Bone mineral density test (discuss with your health care provider)
•Pap smear every one to three years after three consecutive tests
•Cholesterol test every five years
•Mental health screening (discuss with health provider)
•Chlamydia test if you are at high risk

50 Years of Age and Older
•Flu shot every year
•Tetanus-diphtheria shot every 10 years
•Pneumonia shot once at age 65
•Hepatitis B shots (discuss with your health care provider)
•Colonoscopy every 10 years
•Rectal exam every five to 10 years
•Fecal occult blood test yearly
•Bone density test at age 65 to screen for osteoporosis (thinning of the bones)
•Blood pressure every one to two years.
•Pap smear every one to three years after three consecutive normal tests
•Chlamydia test if you are at high risk
