World AIDS Day is December 1, 2009

The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988. It is observed every year on December 1. World AIDS Day provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic. Worldwide, an estimated 33 million people are living with HIV - including more than one million Americans. Click here for more information.

Local HIV/STD Counseling and Testing

The Oak Park Health Department now offers confidential testing and treatment for sexually transmitted disease (STD) as well as anonymous or confidential testing for HIV. Appointments are necessary. Testing and treatment is free for Oak Park residents, but non-residents are charged a fee based on a sliding income-based scale. To schedule a confidential appointment, call the Health Department at 708.358.5483.

Oak Park HIV/STD counseling and testing services are comprehensive and discrete. STD medical records are confidential, which means no one has access to them except authorized Department of Health personnel. You can be tested for HIV confidentially or anonymously. Anonymous testing results are not linked to a person's name, while confidential testing results are linked to the patient by a patient ID code. Medical staff are professional doctors, nurses and physician’s assistants experienced in working at HIV/STD testing facilities.

What You Can Expect during a clinic visit

Upon arrival, you will be asked to fill out forms asking for information about yourself and your reasons for coming to the clinic. Please be accurate and detailed when providing information on the forms and when providing your medical history. This is necessary so that we can provide you with our most effective services.

During the medical exam, you will meet with a nurse and a counselor who will take a specimen from you and answer any questions you may have. You will then schedule an appointment for the following week where you will learn the results of your test and be provided with treatment options.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 708.358.5483.
