School Crossing Guard Program School crossing guards are civilian members of the Oak Park Police Department who are assigned to direct pedestrian traffic across streets and intersections. The primary function of a crossing guard is to ensure the safety of children at 20 key crossings. The School Crossing Guard Program follows criteria established in 1993 by the League of Women Voters Parent Task Force Committee. The public school year consists of approximately 181 days and private school year approximately 173 days. Crossing guards are governed by all the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the Oak Park Police Department. Crossing guards have no police power to make arrests or to carry a firearm. |
