Fire Prevention
Fire Prevention and Education
The Fire and Life Safety House, a trailer owned by the seven towns located around Oak Park that comprise a mutual aid pact known as Division 11, is brought to each school in the spring. The full-size trailer is set up like a home with a kitchen, living room and bedroom/bathroom. Children are taken through the trailer where "set-up" fire and life safety hazards are discussed. "Freddie" the robotic fire truck is a much-requested addition to the Fire Department's education programs. "Freddie" is used at various events such as A Day In Our Village, May Madness, Whittier School Ethnic Festival and a number of open houses. "Freddie" interacts with the crowds and helps bring the fire safety message to the young as well as young at heart in a fun way. School, youth and other groups may schedule tours of Fire Headquarters. The tours last approximately 30 minutes and age appropriate lessons are discussed. On-duty fire personnel discuss the equipment used on each piece of fire apparatus and hand out safety information pamphlets. Residents also can schedule a fire company to make an appearance at a block party to talk about fire and life safety issues, show the fire apparatus and answer questions.. This seasonal program is on a first come, first served basis and appearances are limited to one on Saturday and one on Sunday of each weekend. Residents must come into Fire Headquarters to register. In addition, the Oak Park Fire Department will provide speakers to address a variety of fire and other safety topics including home fire safety, emergency preparedness, burn awareness and prevention, juvenile firesetter intervention and counseling, carbon monoxide/smoke detector placement and home escape plans. To schedule a speaker, call the Fire Headquarters at 445.3300. |
