Fire Prevention
The Fire Prevention Bureau (FPB) inspects commercial and public buildings for compliance with Village Fire Codes. More than 300 buildings currently are designated "target buildings" and are inspected twice a year. A "target" building poses either an increased risk in its operation or storage, such as restaurants and gas stations, or an increased life safety risk due to it's occupant load, such as schools and churches. Regular inspections of businesses and public building also allow the department to update its pre-incident plans, which help firefighters be prepared with details about a structure should a fire occur. Data gathered by Fire personnel during an on-site inspection is digitalized and can be retrieved during an emergency incident via computers installed in firefighting vehicles. Fire Protection Systems The Fire Prevention Bureau oversees all fire protection equipment installed in Village buildings. Bureau personnel provide consulting support in the design phase, review blueprints prior to installation, conduct field inspections and perform final acceptance tests of the systems, including sprinklers and alarms. Emergency Planning Working with building and business owners, Fire Prevention Bureau staff provides expert assistance developing emergency plans, ranging from a simple fire drill to a complex evacuation procedure for a high-rise building. Fire Investigation The Fire Department has the responsibility to determine the origin and cause of any fire in the Village. With a staff of eight state-certified investigators, the Fire Prevention Bureau manages all investigations and related training programs. |
