Water Meter Reading
The
Village has more than 13,000 water meters. Residential meters are read quarterly.
If you discover higher than expected water usage, and suspect there may
be running water or a leak, first try this simple test to try to isolate
the problem:
Put a few drops of dark colored dye, or food coloring, in
the tank of a toilet. If you see the dye in the bowl of the toilet without flushing, there is a problem within your fixture. You should also check
for other leaks using a plumbing contractor. If the problem is traced
to a Village meter, a resident may request that the Village install a substitute
meter to test the existing meter. This process requires a $75
deposit that is forfeited if the original meter is found to be correctly reading
water usage. If there is a problem with the original water meter, the meter
will be replaced by the Village, the $75 fee refunded and
the bill adjusted to reflect the average water used by that customer. If a property owner receives estimated water bills, it means staff is unable to read the meter. This could mean a faulty meter or meter reading device, a small, electronic mechanism that allows data to be gathered without entering the property. To make an appointment to replace a meter or meter reading device, call 358.5700 or e-mail the Public Works Department
