The Great Paint Exchange coming to new
location
Oak Parkers can safely dispose of
unwanted, but usable paint, or take home free paint, at The Great Paint Exchange scheduled for Sat., Sept. 24, at the Rehm Pool
parking lot, at 515 Garfield Ave. Half-to-full cans of latex
paint will be accepted from 9 - 11 a.m., and then given away
from 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. For more information, call 358.5700 or
email publicworks@oak-park.us.
Worms anyone?
Keep Oak Park Beautiful has partnered with Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School to
develop a pilot program for vermicomposting, a waste reduction activity that employs worms
to eat food waste from the school lunchroom. Students will work
with staff to make sure that the worms are “eating
right” and teachers will include a vermicomposting
component in the science curriculum. The worm bin, worms and
educational materials are being purchased with grant funds from
Keep Illinois Beautiful and the Illinois Environmental
Protection Agency. The good soil created by the worms will be
used to enhance landscaped areas around the school during an
Earth Day celebration in April. For more information, call
358.5700 or email publicworks@oak-park.us.
Historic district bike and walk event
planned
The second annual community bike and walk
through the Ridgeland Historic District is scheduled for Sun.,
Oct. 2. The event will begin at Pleasant Home, 217 Home Ave.
Registration will begin at 1 p.m. and the ride at 2 p.m.
Co-sponsored by the Energy and Environmental Commission,
Historic Preservation Commission, Oak Park Department of Public
Health, Park District of Oak Park and the Oak Park Cycle Club,
the event is especially designed for families. Streets will be
closed to vehicles so that young children can enjoy
traffic-free streets and parents can appreciate the historic
architecture. Prior to the ride, participants can register
their bicycles with the Village, while children learn about
simple bicycle mechanics and safety. For more information, call
358.5700 or email publicworks@oak-park.us.
Residents urged to continue watering
parkway trees
With the cooler weather of September, the
impact on trees of one of the three driest periods since
weather record keeping began in 1895 should begin to abate. But
trees can still use residents’ help ensuring they have
sufficient water. The entire area from the flare of the roots
at the tree base to at least the edge of the foliage known as
the drip line should be thoroughly watered for maximum benefit.
For more information on tree care or watering restrictions,
call 358.5700 or email publicworks@oak-park.us.
