Help to stop smoking
"Freedom from Smoking," a six-week, seven-session stop smoking program from the American Lung Association, will begin at 7 p.m., Tues., Sept. 16, at Village Hall, 123 Madison. Fee for the program, which helps smokers deal with withdrawal, cravings, weight gain, stress management and improving their physical fitness while they quit, is $20. Scholarships are available. Cholesterol, glucose, body fat and blood pressure testing is available for $5 during the orientation session, at 7 p.m., Tues., Sept. 9. For information or to register, call 358.5484.
Affordable health insurance
Adults and children who meet financial eligibility guidelines are now being enrolled in low-cost/no-cost health care plans. KidCare covers doctor visits, hospital and clinic care, X-rays, lab tests and prescriptions for children and pregnant women, and helps pays premiums of employer-sponsored or private insurance plans. Access to Care also covers doctor visits, lab tests, x-rays and prescriptions, but participants are responsible for a nominal co-pay for each service. To learn more call 358.5484.
New fall walking club schedule
Beginning Tues., Sept. 2, Oak Park Walkers will gather at 9 a.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday, in Scoville Park, 800 Lake St., and 6 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, by the south entrance of Village Hall, 123 Madison St. Groups walk for one hour and are led by the Healthy Oak Park Coalition, Oak Park Department of Public Health, Park District of Oak Park, Oak Park YMCA and Temple Fitness. Report dead birds
The Oak Park Department of Public Health and the Illinois Department of Public Health are assessing the prevalence of West Nile Virus by testing dead crows and bluejays. To report a dead bird, call the Village's Dead Bird Reporting Hotline at 358.5694. For questions about the virus call 358.5487.
Dentists asked to volunteer
Dentists are needed to treat low-income residents at a reduced cost. The Oak Park Oral Health Referral Program matches financially eligible residents with volunteer practitioners who agree to accept a pre-determined fee for services. Referred patients have been pre-screened and have a treatment plan and x-rays. Dentists select the patients they wish to treat. The program offers reduced lab costs through a nonprofit dental lab.
