Art friendly Oak Park
The Village of Oak Park was recently selected for honorable mention as an Illinois Art Friendly Community. The award, presented by the Illinois Arts Alliance Foundation and the Illinois Municipal League, recognizes innovative approaches to using the arts to build healthy communities. The Oak Park Area Arts Council nominated the Village for the award. Recipients demonstrated government support of the arts, commitment of volunteer resources, tangible results, community support and creative approaches to integrating the arts with municipal strategies. Honoring a true Oak Parker
A bronze bust of world-renowned chemist, humanitarian, long-time Oak Park resident and middle school namesake Percy L. Julian will be dedicated at 2 p.m., Oct. 25, in Scoville Park. Sculptor Erik Blome, who also created the statue of civil rights activist Rosa Parks now on display in Julian's boyhood home of Montgomery, Alabama, created the bust. Purchased with private donations, the bust will be located southwest of the war memorial. For more information on the dedication ceremony or the fundraising effort, call 383.3307.
Grant to help discourage teen smoking
A $6,000 state grant from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission will help the Village continue its efforts to reduce the access of youth to tobacco products. This is third year the Village has received a grant, which helps train tobacco retailers to better recognize underage buyers and know how to turn them away. The grant also helps fund compliance checks and supports smoking cessation education programs. For more information on compliance efforts, call 386.3800 or email police@oak-park.us. New police substation to open
Oak Park police will soon have a new substation at 618 S. Austin Boulevard, just south of Harrison Street. The new substation will be used by the Resident Beat Officer and available to Illinois State and Chicago police officers. In addition, the substation will have an accessible emergency call box outside that will connect directly to the emergency dispatch center. Parks, recreation study committee members named
Eleven citizen volunteers and two alternates have been selected to serve on the Parks and Recreation Citizen Committee, a group formed to help draft a comprehensive master plan to set priorities and determine future program and capital needs. Named to the committee were W. Douglas Varn (chair), Martin J. Bracco, Jessica Bullock, Laura E. Kaufman, Susan Kurtenbach, Gail R. Moran, John Mullins, Patience R. Nelson, Rickey Sain Sr., David Stannard and Kathy Stohr. Alternates are Kathryn M. Kelly and Mary Kay O'Grady. The new citizens committee will provide ongoing community input to the Park District, Village and consultants selected to draft the master plan.
