2003 Historic Preservation Awards
Owners of 15 Oak Park homes and businesses were honored with 2003 Historic Preservation Awards. Winners were selected by the Oak Park Historic Preservation Commission using the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, and contextual and design appropriateness considerations. The winners are:
• 605 Lake St. (Oak Park-River Forest High School stadium) - Rehabilitation Award. Made the 1924 Stadium functional for contemporary users, while respecting the structure’s original material, scale, color, texture and character. Oak Park and River Forest High School District 200, owner.
• 511 N. Grove Ave. - Rehabilitation Award. Added new front porch, back deck and garage, and raised roof of older addition to match the original roofline. Carole Powers Lauck, owner
• 6533 North Ave. - Rehabilitation Award. Replaced inappropriate storefront alterations with new, period-sensitive storefront design. Televent, William Steed and Donald Shannon, owners.
• 224 Marion Ct. - Rehabilitation Award. Repaired all windows, added new roof, repaired and replaced wood clapboard siding, replaced stoop with appropriate front porch and dormers. Charles Moelter and Peter Thomas, owners.
• 1020 Chicago Ave. - Rehabilitation Honorable Mention. Saved 19th century barn from demolition and rehabbed into a usable garage. S. Ryan Construction, owner at time of rehab.
• 136 N. Ridgeland Ave. - Adaptive Re-Use Award. Restored the 1925 commercial building for use as bath and kitchen showroom. The Baronger Group, owner.
• 925 Chicago Ave. - Addition Award. Added new front porch exemplary of the early Italianate style. Halina Staszewska, owner.
• 626 Linden Ave. - Addition Award. Seamlessly integrated two-story rear addition without altering the historic character of to this 1926 Georgian-Revival style home. Michael and Linda Caprile, owners.
• 636 Linden Ave. - Addition Award. Added one-story rear addition reflective of the style of this 1914 Tallmadge & Watson home. Brian and Yasmina Duwe, owners.
• 255 Augusta St. (Dole Learning Center) - Addition Award. Architecturally compatible addition provided accessibility to this 1926 Tallmadge & Watson building. Village of Oak Park, owner.
• 213 N. Taylor Ave. - Restoration Award. Extensive exterior repair and restoration made to this 1890 Queen Anne, including cedar shake shingles, gutters and windows. Colleen Moroney Maia, owner.
• 116 N. Oak Park Ave. - Restoration Award. Storefront restored to original configuration, as first step in multi-phase process to restore facade of this 1893-1899 building designed by Patton, Fisher & Miller with additions by E. E. Roberts. James and Noreen Bushouse, owners.
• 516 Augusta St. - Restoration Award. Reinforced original sun porch with new supports and applied new stucco, while reusing the original stone. Dan Garvey, owner.
• 875 Lake St. (Unity Temple) - Restoration/Rehabilitation Award. Phased restoration, including of the cantilevered structural roof slabs and the roofing system. Unitarian Universalist Congregation/Unity Temple Restoration Foundation, owner.
• 801 S. East Ave./601 Van Buren St. (Ascension Church) - Restoration/ Rehabilitation Award. Restoration work on the 1929 structure included roofing, copper flashing, copper dome, exterior stonework, lighting, rewiring and repairs to Rose Window. Rehab of the 1912 school included new roofing, windows, lighting, asbestos removal and mural restoration. Ascension Church, owner.
