Oak Park Fire Department emergency vehicles soon will have more than their flashing lights and sirens to warn other drivers of their approach. Equipment now being installed at 40 major intersections in the community will allow fire department vehicles to change traffic lights to green as they travel to and from an emergency scene. Equipment also is being installed along perimeter streets such as Harlem Avenue, which is shared by neighboring communities who participate in mutual aid agreements with Oak Park. The Village is part of a larger program that includes 12 surrounding communities that are equipping some 163 area intersections, including those in Oak Park. Transmitters installed in the emergency vehicles will trigger the light changes, making it safer for emergency vehicles to travel busy routes as they rush to provide aid and transport victims to area hospitals. More than two-thirds of the cost of the equipment and its installation was funded by a federal grant. The system should be fully operational in early 2004. For more information call the Fire Department at 445.3300 or email fire@oak-park.us.
