Thanks to extensive, community input the Cap the Ike study
has taken a step closer to a design preferred by the community
for covering the Eisenhower Expressway through Oak Park. Three concepts,
synthesized from six concepts presented to the public in July,
will be presented for public review and discussion at 7 p.m.,
Thurs., August 12 in Council Chambers at Village Hall, 123
Madison St. When the six initial preliminary design concepts
were presented last month, community input provided valuable
insight about the most desired features of a cap that will be
reflected in the three more defined concepts to be presented at
this month's meeting. This additional, ongoing public
input on the concepts will be used to further refine the
designs and develop a recommended design for capping the Ike.

In the first
two months after accepting a challenge to walk 10,000 steps a
day, 26 Oak Parkers have taken nearly nine million collective
steps (and counting) on the path toward better health. The goal
of the Oak Park Walkers Challenge, sponsored by the Department of Public Health,
Oak Park YMCA, Park District of Oak Park and Temple Fitness, is
to show that even simple activities like walking can be an
enjoyable way to manage weight and stay healthy. Walkers who
accepted the challenge first received information on walking
technique, equipment, safety, interesting routes and existing
walking groups in the community they might want to join. They
also received a free check of their blood pressure and body
mass, and a pedometer to help them keep track of their steps.
Organized groups meet at the main Oak Park Public Library, 834
Lake St., at 8:45 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and
at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To find out more about
walking groups or other simple activities to increase daily
physical activities call 708.358.5484 or email health@oak-park.us. The Health
Department also is interested in residents’ favorite
walking routes. To share your route, call 708.358.5631 or
email the Health Department.
Stop smoking support
Freedom From Smoking, a six-week program developed by the American Lung
Association will begin Sept 14 with an orientation at the Oak
Park YMCA. Cost is $20, refundable if you attend all six
classes sessions. Financial assistance is available. Call
358.5484 to register and receive orientation materials. Stop
smoking support groups also are forming now for new and not so
new non-smokers. Call 358.5484 or email health@oak-park.us.
Dentists needed
Volunteer dentists are needed to treat
low-income residents at a reduced cost. The Oak Park Oral
Health Referral Program matches financially eligible residents
with practitioners who agree to accept a pre-determined fee for
services. Referred patients have been pre-screened and have a
treatment plan and x-rays. Practitioners select the patients
they wish to treat. The program has reduced lab costs through a
nonprofit dental lab. For more information call 358.5484 or
email health@oak-park.us.
Affordable health insurance available
Adults and children who meet financial
eligibility guidelines are now being enrolled in
low-cost/no-cost health care plans. KidCare covers doctor
visits, hospital and clinic care, X-rays, lab tests and
prescriptions for children and pregnant women, and helps pays
premiums of employer-sponsored or private insurance plans. Access to Care also
covers doctor visits, lab tests, x-rays and prescriptions, but
participants are responsible for a nominal co-pay for each
service. To learn more call 358.5484 or email health@oak-park.us.
