Yardwaste pick-up program begins
Collection of bundled brush and yardwaste will begin the week of April 4. Bundled brush no larger than two feet in diameter and four feet in length and yardwaste such as grass clippings, leaves, shrubs and vines will be picked up on regular collection days. A green yardwaste sticker must be attached to each brush bundle, 32-gallon paper bag and rigid container filled with yardwaste. Stickers are available for $1.80 each from Oak Park grocery and hardware stores and the Cashier's Office at Village Hall, 123 Madison St. Any yardwaste mixed with trash will not be collected. Residents are urged to look for alternatives to bagging yardwaste such as mulching mowers, leaf shredders or backyard compost piles. For more information call 358.5700 or email publicworks@oak-park.us.
Great Paint Exchange coming
Oak Parkers can safely dispose of unwanted, but usable paint, or take home free paint, at the Great Paint Exchange scheduled for Sat., April 23, at the Public Works Center, 131 South Blvd. Half-to-full cans of latex paint will be accepted from 9 - 11 a.m., and then given away from 1 - 3 p.m. For more information, call 358.5700 or email publicworks@oak-park.us.
Residents urged to participate in alley clean-up program
Oak Parkers who have come to realize that cleaner alleys mean safer alleys are urged to organize their neighbors and participate in the Alley Clean-Up Program, which provides trash bags, pink refuse hauling stickers and rubber gloves, as well as information on organizing a successful and safe event. The program was developed by the Keep Oak Park Beautiful Committee to assist residents who want to make a difference in their neighborhood. While the alley clean-up program is ongoing, the efforts of residents who participate during April and May will coincide with Keep America Beautiful-s Great American Clean-Up. For more information call 358.5700 or email publicworks@oak-park.us.
Spring tree planting begins
Some 130 trees will be planted in April and May as the Forestry Division replaces parkway trees lost to damage and disease. In order to diversify the tree population a wide variety of species will be planted, including Autumn Blaze Maple, Chanticleer Pear, Swamp White, Bur, Crimson Spire and Shingle Oaks, Black Locust, and Flax Mill Majesty and Green Mountain Sugar Maples. Newly planted trees typically are about two and a half inches in diameter and average 10 to 14 feet in height. Factors such as underground utilities, parkway widths and shade tolerance may affect planting sites. Trees must be planted at least 10 feet from a streetlight, 25 feet from a corner and five feet from the water service box. Full size shade trees require a minimum of 35 feet between them.
