North Avenue, Oak Park Avenue and Madison
Street resurfacing projects will highlight another busy
construction season as the Village launches the 2005 capital
improvement program.
North Avenue
The Village will once again join with the
City of Chicago to repave the final segment of North Avenue
from Narragansett Avenue to Austin Boulevard. North Avenue was
repaved from Harlem Avenue to Narragansett two years ago. This
second phase is expected to be completed by early summer.
Oak Park Avenue
Work already is underway on Oak Park
Avenue, as the second phase of the complete surfacing of this
busy north-south route moves toward an early summer completion.
Work was completed last year from North Avenue to Lake Street,
and crews now are focusing on the segment between Lake and
Roosevelt Road. The overall project also includes curb
replacements and new traffic signals connected by fiber optics
to allow for better traffic flow along the entire length of the
route.
Madison Street
Madison Street is scheduled for complete
resurfacing from Austin Boulevard to Harlem Avenue, including
new landscaping of the islands between Austin and Oak Park
Avenue. Work on Madison Street is expected to begin in May with
an estimated October completion date.
Other projects
In addition to the three major repaving
projects, Village contractors also will resurface a number of
local streets, replace water and sewer mains and repair gutters
and curbs along about 25 blocks, or three miles of roadway.
Some 16 alley segments are scheduled for reconstruction this
season as well and the Village's ongoing sidewalk program
is expected to replace walkways adjacent to about 400
residences throughout the Village.
Notifying residents
As project start dates approach, residents
who live in areas most affected will receive a written alert,
including start times and estimated completion dates, and a
telephone number to call for the latest information. Parking
permit holders affected by construction will be notified prior
to work beginning so that temporary alternate parking
arrangements can be made.
A special construction update telephone
line -- 358.5701 -- will provide regularly updated recorded
messages on the largest projects around the clock. Residents
who call during regular work hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.,
Monday through Friday, also can reach an operator for the
latest information on any specific project.
In addition, information on traffic
disruptions and alternate travel routes will be posted on the
Village's website, www.oak-park.us, and broadcast on
VOP-TV Channel 6, the government access cable television
station. A project map also is posted on the Village website.
With a goal of helping residents reduce the
chance of identity theft, the Village will host a special bulk shredding
recycling event from 9 a.m. to noon, Sat., April 30, at the Public
Works Center, 131 South Blvd. Residents can safely recycle
paper containing personal information such as social security,
credit card and bank account numbers. Please do not bring paper
that can be placed in a recycling cart or bin such as
newspapers, magazines, chipboard or junk mail. For more
information, call 358.5700 or email publicworks@oak-park.us.
