Digging/J.U.L.I.E.

Planning to dig? Call JULIE at 1-800.892.0123. JULIE is a not-for-profit corporation that helps homeowners and excavators find buried utility facilities with one toll-free number. The Village's water, sewer and lighting utilities respond to calls to JULIE by marking the locations of any underground locations in the planned work area, as do all the electrical, gas and telecommunications utilities. Whether planting trees, installing a fence or deck, putting up a basketball hoop or a swing set for the kids, Illinois law requires all homeowners to call JULIE before digging.

Be sure to check with the Village as well before beginning any type of work to make sure you have the proper building permits -- including right-of-way permits if any work may involve or obstruct Village owned parkways, streets or alleys. And should you hire contractors, make sure they are licensed professionals.

Project Checklist:

  • Call JULIE 48 hours (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays) before the start of a project
  • Mark the project area with white paint
  • Make yard or property accessible to the utility locator (no pets or locked gates to yard)
  • Wait the full 48 hours and check to see if all utilizes respond before starting project
  • Hand dig with care 18" on either side of a marked facility
  • Track the JULIE number for reference

Utilities typically use the following color codes for marks: yellow for gas or oil, red for electric, blue for water, orange for telecommunications, and green for sewer.
