Capital Improvement Projects: Street, Water, Sewer, Parking Construction Every spring brings more to Oak Park than just warmer temperatures. Spring also brings the construction season and a host of capital improvements. Typical projects include major road resurfacing, parking lot improvements, sewer and water line replacements, and the ongoing upkeep and replacement of curbs and sidewalks. Projects are funded from many sources including a penny per gallon gas tax and a one percent sales tax dedicated to capital improvements. State and federal grant funds also supplement local funding sources. The Village utilizes many avenues to keep citizens aware of capital improvement projects. As a given project start date nears, residents who live in areas most affected by a particular project receive a written alert, including start times and estimated completion dates, and a telephone number to call for the latest information. Parking permit holders affected by construction are notified prior to work beginning and temporary alternate arrangements made. A special construction status telephone line also provides regularly updated recorded messages on the largest projects around the clock. Residents who call the construction update number, 708.358.5701, during regular work hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, also can reach an operator for the latest information on any specific project. In addition, information on traffic disruptions and alternate travel routes will be posted, when possible, on the Village's website and broadcast on VOP-TV6, the government access cable television station. For more information, call 708.358.5720 or e-mail the Public Works Department |
